BURBANK With the growth of the airport and the entertainment industry, Burbank became a center for business and tourism. World-class hotels, trendybars, fine restaurants, renown museums, and fun attractions are all located within Burbank city limits. In 2007, Burbank was named as one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People in the United States. Much of the growth of Burbank echoes that of the entertainment industry. By 1940 Warners, Columbia Pictures and Walt Disney Studios all had locations in Burbank. In the next two decades they were joined by television’s NBC, and the phrase, “Beautiful Downtown Burbank” became a familiar refrain in TV-tied American households.
SHERMAN OAKS In contrast to much of the San Fernando Valley, the area is relatively urbanized, with commercial skyscrapers along Ventura Boulevard as well as scattered throughout. In addition, residential densities are highly mixed, with apartment and condominium neighborhoods alongside single-story residential ones. The area is a hub for regional transportation, business, and shopping. Sherman Oaks is close to two major freeways, serves as a gateway to the San Fernando Valley. The community is perhaps best known as the home of the Sherman Oaks Galleria, considered by many to be the undisputed residence of the Valley Girl, a cultural label popularized by the song and 1983 movie of the same name. Two large shopping malls in the area, numerous smaller boutiques and plazas line Ventura Boulevard, providing residents and visitors with endless window-shopping opportunities.
